Identify a Snake

Appearance

Snakes vary in size and color. Each species is unique, and some non-venomous snakes play "look-alike" to venomous snakes so that they remain unharmed by predators. Snakes found in the Bay Area are for the most part, safe to humans. There are about 19 species of snakes found in the Bay Area and only the western rattlesnake is venomous. Venomous snakes such as the western rattlesnake, tend to have a "spade" shaped head and elliptical pupils while non-venomous snakes have narrower heads and rounded pupils.

Habitat

Snakes enjoy living in deserts, forests, marshes, grasslands, and even bodies of water! Most snakes are harmless, and actually beneficial! Snakes will eat common pests, such as rodents, insects, and amphibians. However, there are some snakes that are very venomous and can put humans and pets in danger just by being present.

Because snakes are cold-blooded, they need a lot of sunlight to keep their bodies warm and maintain homeostasis. This is why you will not find a snake in extremely cold environments.

Snake Problems

Entry

Snakes may enter homes for a safe shelter, since houses are warm and the walls provide a comfortable living space. Snakes can easily enter homes. Lucky for you, Critter Control of Oakland knows how to install preventative measures. Snakes can enter homes through cracks in walls and building foundations, tears in window or door screens, and even holes used for electrical and plumbing. Tall grasses and overgrown lawns will attract snakes, as well as stacks of firewood, brush, and junk piles.

Damage

As mentioned before, snakes rarely hurt people, and usually flee from human interaction. When cornered, snakes will coil and hiss, and may even fake strike to offending parties. This can be very frightening to experience, but no harm is usually caused. Non-venomous snake bites can still be painful, but will leave no lasting effect. In areas where venomous snakes live, approaching the reptiles is much more dangerous; their bites can be deadly if not treated immediately and properly!

Snake Control

Control and Safety

There are many methods to prevent snake infestation. The first step is to seal any holes or cracks in the foundation. You must also cut back tall grasses and weeds, and keep wood piles far enough away from homes.
