Identify a Bat

Appearance & Habitat

The most common bat species in the United States, the little brown bat and big brown bat, are relatively small. They have wings that resemble broad hands with a wingspan ranging from 9-15 inches. Other shared characteristics include short legs, sharp claws, large ears, and fur in light tan or yellowish to dark brown or black in color.

Bats are nocturnal. During the day large groups (numbering in the millions) will roost together using their feet to cling upside down. Bats enjoy roosting in areas that are dark and safe, including caves, hollow trees, and buildings. Bats will awaken and fly out of their roosting area around dusk to go search for food. One large bat colony can eat up to 500,000 pounds of insects in one night! Bats prefer to roost near ponds, lakes, and pools, due to the quantity of food available to them.

Bat Problems

Entry

Bats will enter homes in search of safe and warm shelter. Bats can fit through very small areas and are most commonly found in attics, chimneys, and barns. While pups learn to fly in the summer months, it is common for them to accidentally enter buildings through open doors or windows.

Damage

Bats and humane coexist fairly peacefully. When bats are found in the attic or chimney, the problems involved will make a living space hazardous. Bat guano will harbor dangerous fungal spores, such as histoplasmosis. When bat guano is inhaled or crosses with a human, the effects can be life threatening.
